A talented field of 12 have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of several notable performers over the 2014 Spring Carnival.
Unlucky not to break through for a maiden win at the highest level over his most recent preparation, trainer Peter Moody has confirmed Lidari in the 2015 Carlyon Cup final field.
Securing seven wins and a further six minor places over his 26 competitive appearances so far, Lidari began his racing tenure in his native France before transferring to the care of Moody at the beginning of 2013.
Running fifth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 12th, Lidari continued to impress in finishing fourth in both the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) before placing a close second to Lucia Valentina in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4th.
Placing a credible sixth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) before failing to get the distance in the Melbourne Cup, Lidari has reportedly taken well to his time in the paddock and is primed for a successful racing return on Saturday.
Big Memory was unlucky not to gain entry into the Melbourne Cup after running second in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) on November 1st, but is reportedly in top condition ahead of his return in the 2015 Carlyon Cup.
Running second to Brambles in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) on September 13th, Big Memory was unlucky to be blocked for a run and eighth in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m), but responded in the best way possible when beating a talent-filled field to the line in the Group 2 Herbert Power Quality (2400m) on October 11th.
Running tenth in the Caulfield Cup, the Duke Of Marmalade gelding followed up his Lexus Stakes second with a credible performance for third in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) on November 8th.
Allocated the central barrier 6, Big Memory has been confirmed to be partnered by champion jockey Damien Oliver.
Smokin’ Joey has produced several memorable performances over a mile previously, and will be aiming to return to the winner’s circle over the distance Saturday in the 2015 Carlyon Cup.
Placing an agonizingly-close second to Boban in the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1200m), Smokin’ Joey was unable to secure much of a consistent run of form over the early stages of his 2014 Autumn Carnival campaign, until charging home to win the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) as a rank outsider on May 10th.
Progressing well through spring, highlighted by back-to-back fourth place finishes in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), the son of Encosta De Lago ran on for a credible fourth in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) first-up this time and will be far better for the competitive performance.
