18 runners have been included in nominations for the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend, highlighted by likely appearance of several of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting racing prospects.
Charging home to secure a career-best win to date in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) first-up on January 24th, trainer Peter Gelagotis has included Mourinho in 2015 Carlyon Cup nominations.
Securing eight wins and as many minor places from his 32 career starts so far, Mourinho returned to racing in exceptional form over the 2014 spring; winning a minor over 1500m first-up before running second in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) on September 6th.
Continuing his impressive form in finishing third in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) and returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m), the Oratorio gelding was unlucky to be balloted out of Cox Plate contention, but ended his campaign a credible seventh in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on November 1st.
Understandably thrilled with his first-up results, Gelagotis is confident of continued success for Mourinho in the 2015 Carlyon Cup.
Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level over the 2014 racing calendar, Smokin’ Joey returned for a competitive fourth in the Australia Stakes and is sure to be greater for the run in the 2015 Carlyon Cup.
Unable to make much of an impact over his first four starts last autumn, Smokin’ Joey arrived in Adelaide as a rank $41 outsider to take out the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), but displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to take out the feature race.
Steadily building to the task through spring, the son of Encosta De Lago placed seventh in each of the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m), but found some success when travelling to Perth for fourth place finishes in each of the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).
Red Excitement has returned to racing in exceptional condition this time in, and will be aiming to make a successful return to Group-level company this weekend, having been including in 2015 Carlyon Cup nominations.
Failing to finish outside the places over five starts through the 2013/14 summer, Red Excitement spent nearly a year away from competition, but has returned for back-to-back victories in the Drummond Golf 3.y.o+ (1400m) and Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).
Peter Moody has revealed Lidari will be set for major staying races in the late stages of the 2015 Autumn Carnival, and has nominated the talented import for a racing return in the Carlyon Stakes.
Placing fifth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 16th, Lidari ran fourth in each of the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) before a close performance for second in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4th.
Placing a credible sixth in the major Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), the Acclamation gelding was unable to get the distance when 19th in the Melbourne Cup, but is sure to perform well over 1400m first-up this weekend.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Carlyon Cup is due to be completed and released on Wednesday.
