Having returned to racing in exceptional form this season, trainer Gerald Ryan has revealed Red Excitement will tackle Saturday’s Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse.
Securing ten wins and a further six minor places over his 27 start career so far, Red Excitement charged home to win the Drummond Golf 3.y.o+ (1400m) first-up on December 20th before repeating the dose in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) last time out on January 17th.
Thrilled with the 13 length victory posted by the son of Excites over a classy field including He’s Your Man in a 1030m Rosehill barrier trial last Tuesday, Ryan is confident the step-up to a mile will not faze Red Excitement in the 2015 Carlyon Cup.
“He couldn’t help but win,” Ryan told AAP.
“He was in front and a lot of the horses behind him were not extended and were backing off him.
“He wasn’t pulling away.
“In saying that he’s in good order and ready for the 1600 metres now.
“He gets his head down low and sticks his neck out. He just wants to win.”
Failing to finish outside the places over six starts through the 2013/14 summer, Red Excitement placed second to Emblems in the Rosehill Gardens 3.y.o+ (1200m) first-up; progressing to third in a minor over 1350m on January 4th before taking out each of the Gardenia Handicap (1400m), February Handicap (1400m) and Eatability Handicap (1600m).
Having returned to the paddock over the 2014 Autumn Carnival and missed spring as a result of a minor ailment, Red Excitement appears primed for a successful return to black type company in the 2015 Carlyon Cup, having not contested a rated event since the 2014 edition of the Gosford Guineas.
