Carlyon Cup History

The Carlyon Cup is run under set weight and penalty conditions and is open to both sexes. The prize money for the race is AUD$150,000.

Previously known as the T.S. Carlyon Cup, the Carlyon Cup has been known by its current name since 2000. Some horses use the Carlyon Cup as a lead up event to the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington in three weeks time. The Group 2 St George Stakes is another natural target for horses who run well in the Carlyon Cup.

A principal race between its 1977 inauguration and 1979, the Carlyon Cup was allocated Group 2 status in 1980. Between then and 2002, the Carlyon Cup retained its Group 2 status, but was relegated to Group 3 in 2003. Since then, the Carlyon Cup has remained a Group 3 event.

Some notable winners of the Carlyon Cup include Ngawyni (1977), Hyperno (1978), Super Impose (1989), Veandercross (1993), Northerly (2001) and Apache Cat (2007).

The Carlyon Cup was initially held over a distance of 2000 metres, but has changed distance a few times over the years.
